The term "Combat Triad" was used years ago by Jeff Cooper in the field of defensive shooting to describe the three core elements required for a possible successful outcome of a confrontation: Mindset, Gundhandling and Marksmanship.
In recent years, the term has become more generalized and now stands for Mindset, Tactics and Skills.
All three elements should always be considered in relation to each other and a possible success within an aggressive or violent confrontation is therefore largely dependent on the so-called weakest link within the chain.
Mindset - Every action requires a robust decision so that you are committed and prepared to endure all the consequences within the further course and also the consequences afterwards. This includes keeping a clear head and focusing on the "desired end result".
Tactics - Not all skills are suitable for all situations. Tactics is about using knowledge of one's own abilities and their limits as well as possible knowledge of the physical and mental abilities of another person and the environment to close or increase the "gap" between oneself and another person to one's own advantage.
The tactic focuses on a planned, adaptive "interaction" between oneself, the other person and the environment.
Skills - Technical skills and knowledge. This includes ensuring the identification, maximization and development of required resources. The term resources in this context includes any kind of physical aspects such as technique, endurance, strength, adaptability, speed.
"The one who anticipates the action wins. The one who does not, loses" (Jeff Cooper)
If you look at Jeff Cooper's "Combat Triad" in comparison to John "Lofty" Wiseman's "Vital Pyramid" or similar representations, for example, the importance of a single element is not emphasized here, but rather the interdependence of individual aspects.
As important as the right mindset is for a possible successful outcome of a confrontation, it is all the more important that this mindset is also dependent on other necessary skills.
